Tips for emergency plumping

Almost every home owner will encounter a plumbing emergency at one time or another, but there are emergency plumbers in Calgary ready to help if living around there. These are the times you will need an expert to come to your immediate rescue to avoid additional problems such as spoiling other parts of the home or even accidents that result from water overflows and the resulting untidy situations.

Time for emergency plumbing needs could be a time of frustration to a home owner because most plumbers could take advantage and charge exorbitant fees. We have prepared quick tips that tell you what to do to deal with these emergency plumbing situations before contacting emergency plumbers in Calgary to proceed with the rest of the hard work:

1. Locate main water shut off valve: Because you will need to shut off the water quickly after a plumbing emergency, make sure to locate this valve in an old or new home. If you are using city or municipal water supply, the valve is located near the water meter. If you use well water supply, check to locate the valve near the pump. Shutting off the main water supply, even mains to individual gadgets, equipment, tubs and toilets could be the most immediate action to take in case of burst pipes, frozen pipes and malfunctioning of washing machines.

2. Dealing with faucet or supply line leakages and drips: Shut the main water supply in order to have the hot water tank run dry. You also need to break power supply to the water heater to avoid burning out of the heating element if the water is cut off and the power supply continues. Locate the breaker and cut off power.

3. Clogged and overflowing toilets: It is possible to prevent an overflow from a toilet if you find it in time. Make sure to turn off the cold water in the nearby sink or bathtub if the water level in the toilet appears to getting in an overflowing situation.  Shut off the water supply line which is located behind the toilet, near the floor. You can then proceed to unclog the toilet or engage emergency plumbers in Calgary to do it.

4. Using flange plungers: Having this tool at home should help you avoid making constant calls to a plumber. Of course, most homes are familiar with toilet clogging, and some cases are not that serious to warrant the much money paid to remove it. The plunger is a tool used to pull blockage out of the drain trap through vacuum suction. You just insert it into the toilet opening, pump it several times and then pull it out sharply.

5. Dealing with clogged sinks: Again, you can quickly remove blockage on a sink using the standard cup-style plunger. You simply center it over the drain, pump several times to create a vacuum, and suck the clogs out of the drain. You need to have the right cup plunger based on the size of the sink.  If the sink is leaking, locate the valve under the vanity or cabinet and shut it off. If it is a bathtub, the valve could be located behind an access panel on the wall behind the tub’s faucet.

6. Toilet self-flushing:   This could be as a result of the flush mechanism failure and it can cause a lot of water to go to waste. Turn the water off before replacing, repairing or adjusting the flush mechanism.
